Unit Question: Can We Control Nature? Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity Assessment: Information booklet write up following field trip on Coastal Management in Barbados.
In this unit we will be looking at erosion and weathering and its effect on various mostly coastal landforms. We will then look at the various ways in which the Coastline is used by humans. Next we will look at the pressures on the coast and how both physical and human factors are affecting the Coastline. In this we will be looking at potential problems caused by global warming. Lastly we will look at how coastlines can be managed, and consider examples from Bangladesh and the UK. If time allows we will try and incorporate a field trip to different parts of the island to consider some of the processes at work and measure them.
Lesson 1: What are the main Physical Forces of Change
This lesson will look at the difference between Weathering and Erosion and look at what are the different types of Weathering.
Main Resources:
Page 246 of New Wider World
Worksheet 15.1 Weathering
Homework 1:
a) Almost 66% of the worlds Population lives 150km from the sea. Why is this?
b) Create a spider diagram to show the different ways that humans use the coastline.
You can use pictures to help improve it.
If you want you could use this page to help with ideas
Weathering Weakens cliffs at the top
Erosion by waves weakens cliffs at the base
Coastal Erosion
What are waves?
Questions:
1. What does it mean by the Fetch, and how does this affect the power of waves.
Then write in your books the meaning of the following. For each accompany it with a diagram.
Corrasion:
This is the process where rocks, pebbles and sand in the waves are thrown against cliffs and they wear them down like sandpaper.
Attrition:
This is the process when rocks bang into one another and wear away the edges. This is why beach pebbles are so smooth.
Solution:
Sea water is slightly acidic and therefore it dissolves rocks, in particular softer rocks such as limestone.
Hydraulic Pressure:
This is the force of waves entering cracks in rocks. The air is compressed and then as the wave retreats the air expands with explosive force breaking fragments of rock off.
Processes of Transportation and Deposition - Most of this is a result of Longshore Drift on the Coastline.
Your Turn to Create some Movies:
In pairs you will be creating movies with annotated pictures, animations, voiceovers, music - all singing all dancing Oscar nominated.
Group 1
Arches, Stacks, stumps
Group 2
Headlands and bays
Group 3
Cliff Retreat and wave cut platforms
Group 4
Longshore Drift and Spit formation (also bars)
For all of these you will need to
a) Collect photos and examples from around the world, and if possible from Barbados.
b) search for flash animations and save them
c) Find out exactly how they are formed
d) Think about how you will present these in a sequence - this should be done by writing a storyboard.
e) Once this is all done then you can start putting the movie together using microsoft moviemaker (and no you can't just do a powerpoint)!
An important note.
In your explanation you need to mention all the processes that are happening. E.g. if you have a cliff, then there is both weathering of the cliff at the top - so name and describe the processes. You need to also say what happens at the base of the cliff and mention and describe the erosional processes. If the main process is transportation, then you need to have a very good description of how longshore drift works.
Criteria Assessed on
A: Knowledge
C: Skills
D: Presentation and Organisation
demonstrate subject content knowledge and understanding through the use of basic descriptions and explanations, supported by a limited number of relevant facts and/or examples.
use different media and technologies to research, select, interpret and communicate simple data
present and express basic information and ideas in a clear and concise manner , clearly document source
: To download and fill in all aspects of erosional and depositional landforms.
What Problems does the Coastline Face?
Think about all the present and future problems that the coastline could face and create a spider diagram of this.
Cliff Erosion and Responses
Page 304 New Wider World.
Questions to consider: What causes erosion
What are the effects of erosion
What are the responses to erosion - hard and soft engineering solutions.
What problems do some areas of the Barbados Coastline face and how should they be addressed?
This will be in the form of an enquiry, followed up by fieldwork, research and an assessed written paper.
Line of Enquiry
1. Consider the issues facing the Barbados coastline that especially relate to physical processes
2. Come up with a number of hypotheses that you might be able to test
Think about what we are looking for -
evidence of physical processes at work
evidence that humans have addressed these issues with some kind of engineering solutions
evidence that some human actions may have effects on other areas.
You will need to consider what might be good places to go on a field trip to try and look for evidence.
Primary Information Collection: To be carried out on a field trip
Secondary Information Collection: How might we find evidence of change on the coastline
You will need to collect a range of sources of information about the Barbados coastline for your writeup.

Assesment Write up:
This is in the form of a newsletter writeup either for the CZMU magazine or one that will be entered into the school weekly focus. In it you will be describing the challenges faced by the CZMU and how they responded to it in the South of the island and what plans are in place for the West in the Holetown area.
You will need to use information that you learnt on the trip but also you need to research a bit aswell. The best thing to do is to use the links above as a start, there is some really useful information. I have asked Antonio rowe for the powerpoint and i will put it here when i get it. In the meantime, although I said i would not put any photos on, but look at the top of the page again. You can go to the flickr page they are on and download some to annotate. There are added extras from the place we would have visited in the north east if we had time. Maybe next year!
Introduction: A positive start - do some research on this one from some of the sites above to say what the area was like, and that after some objections to the project the Boardwalk was constructed. It has had many positive review, however there is still a lot of work to be done in other areas of the island. Section 1 - Meeting with Antonio Rowe
Describe how enlightlening this was, and what you learnt Section 2 - Here you will describe some of the methods found along the boardwalk and add annotated photos. You will also add results from your bipolar analysis here. Section 3 - Holetown - Why did we go here and what were your initial feelings just after having seen the Boardwalk.
Describe the condition of the beach and how hotel owners have tried emergency methods along here. Annotate photos and show your bipolar analysis here. What are your conclusions relating to the problems here. Section 4 - a description and analysis of the plan for the Holetown area. Section 5 - some conclusions - What are the problems Barbados faces on its coastal area. Why has erosion increased so much in recent years. Is it sea level rise or have there been other factors. What is the future for the coral of the area?
Ideas for Follow up to add to write up
Do a youtube search for the Barbados Boardwalk. What are the types of videos that come up. Are they positive.
Also do the same for image searches on www.flickr.com or another photosharing site. Again what types of images can you find. How could you represent this kind of information graphically?
